International and Local Perspectives
CLIL originated in Europe in the early nineties and it has
moved to other countries which experience a different reality
concerning educational and socio-economic conditions.
Besides, there is a worldwide tendency to globalize higher
education in an attempt to respond to the demands of
universities. In this way, these institutions have as its main
aim “international excellence”, which means that they
educate their students through English since they need the
language to have access to the most updated academic
materials. When talking about CLIL, David Marsh explains
that there is excellence in Europe, especially in Spain in
primary education; in the Netherlands secondary education;
in Austria´s vocational schools, which tend to be very well
financed by the educational administration and where
there is a diversity of teachers working collaboratively, that
is, language and content teachers together with teachers
from different age groups. The younger ones have been
exposed to the new technologies and, consequently, have
a quite integrated mindset; and, therefore, they respond very
well to this integration of language and authentic content
Is CLIL the approach
for the future in our
context?
