immigrant to Neurosurgeon

� is is a story that shows what the human spirit can achieve when there is a will to do so.
Dr. Alfredo Quiñones Hinojosa is a doctor of Mexican origin who was an immigrant from
the U.S. and became the head of the department of neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic, the most
important in the world.
He was born in a town in the outskirts of Mexicali, his fi rst years were living a very humble
life. At the age of 19, he decided it was time to change his life, so he crossed the border, the
fi rst time without success, and the second time, he achieved it. In California, he worked as a
day laborer, painter, picking tomatoes and cotton, among others.
Two years later, he faced death after falling into an oil tank, a doctor saved him and from there
he began to take an interest in this.
During the years he worked in low-paid jobs, he taught statistics in exchange for English
classes.
� at’s how he got a scholarship to study psychology at UC Berkeley. � ere he met Joe
Martinez, from the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurobiology where his passion for the
brain was born. � en he came to Harvard Medical School where he distinguished himself as a
great doctor, he also stood out for social work. He fi nally made his residency in San Francisco
where he became a neurosurgeon.
� en to Hopkins, where he was a professor of Neurology, associate professor of Oncology
and director or the Tumor Surgery Program at Hopkins and then director of Pituitary Surgery
Programs.
Every day, “Dr. Q” makes a diff erence because he runs marathons with his patients to raise
money for fi ghting against cancer.
«Dr. Q» inspires us not to give up, because with eff ort and dedication great things can be
achieved.
A Mexican who teaches us that, without ever forgetting his origins and his identity, he helps
to transform the world of medicine with his research and his work.

Teacher María Andrade Patiño
Stanley Martin Lieber (better known as Stan Lee) was born on December
28, 1922. He was the son of immigrant parents from Romania.
At an early age, he became a messenger for Timely Comics, the company
that would become Marvel.
He worked as a comic writer, and it was never easy, Lee was about to
give up his career because, at work, his boss wanted him to write comics
with much more action; however, he didn´t want to do that throughout his
life. He went home and told everything to his wife, she gave him the best
advice of his life and the result was the creation of “� e Fantastic 4” and
the beginning of a magnifi cent career.
He taught us that we aren´t alone in the world, that we don´t need
superhuman gifts to do incredible things, and make a diff erence.
Anyone can wear the mask, anyone can carry a child, anyone can lift a For me, writing is fun.
No matter how many times they hit us, they knock us down and kick us, “
